AIRN Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name antisense of IGF2R non-protein coding RNA
Description Both spliced and un-spliced long non-coding RNAs are transcribed from this gene. This gene overlaps on the opposite strand the second intron of the insulin-like growth factor 2 receptor gene; a CpG island associated with the second intron denotes an active promoter that drives the expression of this gene. The related mouse gene is responsible for silencing the insulin-like growth factor 2 receptor gene and flanking genes in the imprinted gene cluster of mice. This gene may be expressed in Wilms tumors. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2013]

In the context of genomic imprinting, AIRN is transcribed from the Igf2r locus and silences the Igf2r gene by a transcriptional interference mechanism – its transcriptional overlap with the Igf2r promoter prevents RNA polymerase II recruitment without requiring the mature RNA product."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": " In contrast, studies in pathological conditions have revealed additional functions for AIRN. In development, its essential role in imprinting is achieved through a cis‐acting transcriptional interference mechanism, whereas in disease settings AIRN exerts post‐transcriptional control by interacting with specific proteins. This duality highlights AIRN as a pivotal regulatory molecule whose dysregulation may contribute to pathological states such as cancer and diabetic nephropathy.\n "}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Paulina A Latos, Florian M Pauler, Martha V Koerner, et al.
