| HGNC Family | Non-coding RNAs |
| Name | brain cytoplasmic RNA 1 |
| Description | This gene, which encodes a neural small non-messenger RNA, is a member of the family of interspersed repetitive DNA, and its product represents an example of a primate tissue-specific RNA polymerase III transcript. The RNA sequence is divided into three domains: a 5' portion homologous to the Alu Lm, a central adenosine-rich region, and the terminal 43-nt nonrepetitive domain. It is believed that this gene was retropositionally generated and recruited into a function regulating dendritic protein biosynthesis. At least two pseudogenes of this gene have been identified. In several estrogen receptor–positive breast cancers, BCYRN1 is markedly upregulated and its increased expression correlates with enhanced cell motility, invasion and proliferation, suggesting an oncogenic role (1,2). Similarly, elevated levels of BCYRN1 have been associated with aggressive phenotypes in colorectal, prostate, gastric, hepatocellular, and non‐small cell lung cancers, where it functions by “sponging” specific microRNAs—such as miR‐204‐5p, miR‐939‐3p, and others—to derepress target oncogenes (e.g., HDAC11, cyclin E2) and activate key signaling pathways including PTEN/AKT/p21 and PI3K/AKT, thereby promoting proliferation, metastasis, and chemoresistance (2,4,5,6,7,8).\n "}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n "}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\n In contrast, studies in glioma have revealed that BCYRN1 expression is significantly reduced, with lower levels correlating with tumor progression; in this context, restoration of BCYRN1 expression inhibits cell proliferation and migration via sequestering miR‐619‐5p to regulate targets such as CUEDC2 and modulate the PTEN/AKT/p21 pathway (3). \n "}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n "}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\n Overall, the multifaceted roles of BCYRN1—as a regulator of localized translation in neurons and as a context‐dependent modulator of oncogenic signaling through microRNA sponging in various cancers—highlight its potential as both a prognostic biomarker and a therapeutic target.\n "}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n "}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\n (1)"}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ", (2)"}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "2"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ", (3)"}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "3"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ", (4)"}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "4"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ", (5)"}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "5"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ", (6)"}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "6"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ", (7)"}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "7"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ", (8)"}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "8"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ", (9)."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "9"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Anna Iacoangeli, Yuan Lin, Eric J Morley, et al.
