In doing so, they identify a cohort of “missing proteins” that lack high‐confidence evidence; FAM138A may be among these proteins whose existence and function have yet to be conclusively documented. In a complementary approach, the RNA sequencing study of retinoblastoma (2) profiles widespread transcriptional changes—including those in non‐coding RNAs—emphasizing the complexity of gene regulation in disease. Although FAM138A is not discussed explicitly in the retinoblastoma work, the study underlines that many genes with uncertain functions are being re‐examined in disease contexts to uncover potential roles in cellular regulation or as biomarkers.
