H2AC12 Gene

Name H2A clustered histone 12
Description Histones are basic nuclear proteins that are responsible for the nucleosome structure of the chromosomal fiber in eukaryotes. Two molecules of each of the four core histones (H2A, H2B, H3, and H4) form an octamer, around which approximately 146 bp of DNA is wrapped in repeating units, called nucleosomes. The linker histone, H1, interacts with linker DNA between nucleosomes and functions in the compaction of chromatin into higher order structures. This gene is intronless and encodes a replication-dependent histone that is a member of the histone H2A family. Transcripts from this gene lack polyA tails but instead contain a palindromic termination element. This gene is found in the histone microcluster on chromosome 6p21.33. [provided by RefSeq, Aug 2015]

In one study, activation of the angiotensin II type 1 receptor led to rapid alterations in the post‐translational modifications of H2AC isoforms—specifically, an increase in monomethylation coupled with a decrease in serine‐1 phosphorylation—which enhanced binding to heterochromatin protein 1α, thereby linking extracellular receptor signaling to modulation of chromatin organization and gene regulation."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": " In a distinct model of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, reduced expression of HIST1H2AH was observed alongside changes in proteins controlling apoptosis, autophagy, and cell proliferation, suggesting that dysregulation of H2AC12 levels may impact tumor suppressor mechanisms and contribute to carcinogenesis."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "2"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": " Together, these findings support a model in which H2AC12 plays a key role in chromatin stability and remodeling, serving as a molecular sensor that integrates extracellular signals with epigenetic modifications to influence cell fate and disease pathogenesis.\n "}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Rajaganapathi Jagannathan, Suma Kaveti, Russell W Desnoyer, et al.
