MIR1181 Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 1181
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nmiR‐1181 has emerged as a key regulator in pancreatic cancer and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. In pancreatic cancer tissues and cell models, miR‐1181 is notably downregulated, and its lower expression is linked to poorer clinical outcomes. Functional studies indicate that overexpression of miR‐1181 can suppress cancer stem cell–like properties, invasion, and proliferation by directly inhibiting oncogenic factors such as SOX2 and the STAT3 signaling pathway. Similarly, preliminary evidence in nasopharyngeal carcinoma highlights its potential prognostic value and suggests that miR‐1181 may modulate tumor behavior in this disease context."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "1", "end_ref": "3"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn ovarian cancer, miR‐1181 participates in the regulation of epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT). Studies have shown that the kinase ARK5 is upregulated in ovarian cancer, leading to the suppression of miR‐1181 and, in turn, promoting EMT via its target HOXA10. In contrast, restoration of miR‐1181 levels facilitates mesenchymal–epithelial transition (MET) and may reduce tumor aggressiveness. In addition to its mechanistic role, serum profiling studies also suggest that miR‐1181 could serve as a potential biomarker for ovarian cancer."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "4"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nBeyond its involvement in gynecologic and head‐and‐neck cancers, miR‐1181 also plays critical roles in non‐cancerous proliferative conditions and other malignancies. In pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells, PDGF‐BB downregulates miR‐1181 via PDGF receptor/PKCβ signaling, thereby promoting cell cycle progression and migration through a STAT3‐dependent mechanism—an insight that underscores its potential as a therapeutic candidate for pulmonary arterial hypertension. Conversely, in hepatocellular carcinoma, miR‐1181 is overexpressed and exerts oncogenic effects by targeting and downregulating AXIN1, suggesting that its functional impact may be highly tissue specific."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "6"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Jianxin Jiang, Zhu Li, Chao Yu, et al.
