MIR1184-3 Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 1184-3
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn a study of prostatic cancer versus benign hyperplasia, researchers observed an increased expression of miR-1184 in the plasma of prostatic cancer patients. This up-regulation, along with changes in other microRNAs, was discussed in relation to the regulatory functions of the host genes that contain intronic sequences encoding these microRNAs. Such findings suggest that miR-1184 may be linked to oncogenic processes in prostate tissue, potentially interacting with host gene networks that modulate tumor biology."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn colon cancer cells and tissues, miR-1184 was found to be significantly down-regulated compared to normal controls. Functional assays demonstrated that restoring miR-1184 expression inhibited cancer cell proliferation—evidenced by decreased Ki67 expression—and induced apoptosis through the up-regulation of cleaved caspase-3 and down-regulation of Bcl-2. Mechanistically, miR-1184 directly targets CSNK2A1, and its over-expression reverses the tumor-promoting effects mediated by this gene, positioning miR-1184 as a tumor suppressor in this context."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "2"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nWhile research on non-coding RNAs extends beyond microRNAs, an investigation into circular RNAs in bladder cancer provides broader context to the intricate RNA regulatory networks present in various malignancies.
