| Name | microRNA 1206 |
| Description | microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009] |

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nMiR-1206 is a microRNA located within the multi-cancer susceptibility region 8q24.2, where functional studies have revealed that genetic variations within its precursor transcript—such as a common single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)—can affect its biogenesis. Notably, while variations in other microRNAs like miR-612 exhibit cell type–specific effects on mature miRNA expression, the SNP in miR-1206 appears to modulate its processing in a consistent manner across different cell types. This suggests that changes in miR-1206 maturation could influence gene regulatory networks relevant to tumorigenesis."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nBeyond its role in cancer biology, genetic variation in miR-1206 has also been linked to drug-induced toxicity in clinical settings. In pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia, for instance, a specific SNP in miR-1206 (rs2114358) has been associated with a significantly increased risk of methotrexate-induced oral mucositis.
