| HGNC Family | Non-coding RNAs |
| Name | microRNA 1208 |
| Description | microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009] |

In renal cancer cells, ectopic expression of miR-1208 leads to apoptotic cell death—demonstrated by the accumulation of sub-G1 populations and the cleavage of procaspase-3 and PARP—by directly binding to the 3′-untranslated region of TBC1 domain containing kinase (TBCK) mRNA, thereby repressing TBCK expression; this suppression not only suggests a tumor suppressor role for miR-1208 but also increases the cells’ sensitivity to chemotherapeutic agents such as cisplatin and TRAIL."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": " In a separate context, within atherosclerosis, the long noncoding RNA HAND2-AS1 has been shown to target the miR-1208/SIRT1 axis, where the modulation of miR-1208 is linked to enhanced SIRT1 expression and the promotion of cholesterol efflux proteins ABCA1/G1, collectively contributing to the alleviation of foam cell formation—a critical event in plaque development."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "2"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": " Moreover, genetic studies investigating gene polymorphisms indicate that variations in MIR1208 may influence susceptibility to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), further underscoring the potential clinical relevance of miR-1208 in complex human disorders."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "3"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Eun-Ae Kim, Ji-Hoon Jang, Eon-Gi Sung, et al.
