MIR1231 Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 1231
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nRecent studies have demonstrated that miR‐1231 plays a pivotal role in modulating tumorigenesis. In papillary thyroid cancer, for example, elevated oncogenic circular RNAs—such as circ_0025033 and circKIF4A—promote tumor progression by sponging miR‐1231, thereby relieving its inhibitory control over key oncogenic targets. These findings suggest that, under normal conditions, miR‐1231 functions as a tumor suppressor by restraining cell proliferation, migration, and invasion."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn the context of liver disease and viral infection, miR‐1231 has emerged as a significant factor. In hepatocytes infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV), miR‐1231 is notably upregulated and, when overexpressed, its action leads to a marked suppression of HBV replication. Moreover, genetic variations in IFNAR1 that likely impair miR‐1231 binding have been associated with an increased risk for HBV‑related hepatocellular carcinoma, underscoring its importance in antiviral defense and in modulating cancer susceptibility."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "3"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nBeyond thyroid and liver pathology, miR‐1231 appears to serve as a critical regulator in a diverse range of cancers. In glioma, pancreatic cancer, gastric cancer, ovarian cancer, and gallbladder carcinoma, decreased levels of miR‐1231 are correlated with enhanced malignant behavior and poor prognosis, supporting its role as a tumor suppressor. Similarly, in basal cell carcinoma, oncogenic circular RNAs promote tumorigenesis by sequestering miR‐1231, further highlighting its inhibitory function on cancer progression. In prostate cancer, emerging data implicate miR‐1231 as a potential prognostic biomarker. Intriguingly, in bladder cancer, a novel circRNA has been shown to suppress malignant proliferation and metastasis by sponging miR‐1231—a finding that suggests a context‐dependent, possibly oncogenic function for miR‐1231 in certain cellular environments."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "5", "end_ref": "12"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nWhile several studies provide compelling insights into the functional impact of miR‐1231, additional investigations continue to expand our understanding of its role. Some reports have underscored the need to further delineate the mechanisms of miR‐1231 in malignancies and to explore its utility as a diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic target, reflecting growing research interest in this regulatory RNA."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "13"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Yanhui Pan, Tingting Xu, Yuanzhi Liu, et al.
