MIR1236 Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 1236
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]
Summary
{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nmiR‐1236, frequently referred to as miR‐1236‐3p, has emerged across multiple studies as a critical tumor‐suppressive microRNA in diverse cancers. In ovarian, high‐grade serous ovarian, lung adenocarcinoma, glioma, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, cervical, breast, colorectal, retinoblastoma, and osteosarcoma models, miR‐1236 has been shown to directly target key oncogenic regulators—including zinc finger E‐box binding homeobox 1 (ZEB1), Krüppel‐like factor 8 (KLF8), homeobox B7 (HOXB7), tripartite motif‐containing 37 (TRIM37), metastasis‐associated in colon cancer 1 (MACC1), and gremlin 1 (GREM1)—as well as receptors such as vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 3 (VEGFR3). Downregulation of miR‐1236 (often as a consequence of its sponging by various circular RNAs or long noncoding RNAs) leads to enhanced epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT), cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. These studies underscore its potential as a diagnostic and therapeutic target in oncogenesis."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "1", "end_ref": "15"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nAdditional investigations have revealed that miR‐1236 also modulates viral replication and host immune responses. In the context of HIV‐1 infection, miR‐1236 represses the viral binding partner VprBP in monocytes, contributing to the resistance of these precursor cells to infection. Similarly, in hepatitis B virus models, miR‐1236 directly targets viral mRNAs to decrease replication and protein production. Notably, in studies of ventilator‐associated pneumonia, a polymorphism in the 3′ untranslated region of Toll-like receptor 4 disrupts miR‐1236 binding, leading to altered inflammatory cytokine production. Moreover, cell context–dependent miR‐1236‐mediated activation of the tumor suppressor p21 in non‐small cell lung cancer has been reported, further underscoring its multifaceted regulatory role."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "16", "end_ref": "20"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nCollectively, these findings portray miR‐1236 as a pivotal microRNA that, when appropriately expressed, inhibits tumor progression by tempering oncogene expression and EMT while also modulating viral infectivity and inflammatory responses. Its inhibition—frequently mediated via sequestration by competing endogenous RNAs—removes these vital brakes on cell proliferation and metastasis. Therefore, restoring or mimicking miR‐1236 function represents a promising therapeutic strategy in cancer as well as in managing certain viral infections."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}, {"type": "fg_f", "ref": "16"}, {"type": "fg_f", "ref": "2"}, {"type": "fg_f", "ref": "17"}, {"type": "fg_f", "ref": "3"}, {"type": "fg_f", "ref": "11"}, {"type": "fg_f", "ref": "4"}, {"type": "fg_f", "ref": "19"}, {"type": "fg_f", "ref": "21"}, {"type": "fg_f", "ref": "20"}, {"type": "fg_f", "ref": "5"}, {"type": "fg_f", "ref": "9"}, {"type": "fg_f", "ref": "6"}, {"type": "fg_f", "ref": "8"}, {"type": "fg_f", "ref": "7"}, {"type": "fg_f", "ref": "12"}, {"type": "fg_f", "ref": "22"}, {"type": "fg_f", "ref": "14"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Yu Wang, Shi Yan, Xiaolin Liu, et al.
