| HGNC Family | Non-coding RNAs |
| Name | microRNA 1243 |
| Description | microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009] |

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn pancreatic cancer, miR-1243 has been identified as an epithelial‐mesenchymal transition (EMT)–suppressive microRNA. Overexpression of miR-1243 promotes the expression of E-cadherin by repressing key EMT-associated genes, which not only helps prevent metastatic progression but also increases the sensitivity to the chemotherapeutic agent gemcitabine. These findings highlight the potential of miR-1243 as a therapeutic target and biomarker in pancreatic cancer."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC), a distinct regulatory role for miR-1243 has emerged. Here, the circular RNA circ_0043265 functions as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) by sponging miR-1243, thereby relieving its inhibitory effect on the transcription factor SALL1. The suppression of SALL1 by miR-1243 appears to promote cell proliferation, migration, and invasion; conversely, circ_0043265 overexpression mitigates these oncogenic effects, suggesting that miR-1243 contributes to tumor progression in TSCC."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "2"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nCollectively, these studies underscore the context-dependent functions of miR-1243 in cancer biology. In pancreatic cancer, miR-1243’s suppression of EMT aligns with a tumor-suppressive role, whereas in TSCC its activity—when left unsequestered by circ_0043265—may drive oncogenic processes via downregulation of SALL1. These insights into miR-1243’s dualistic regulatory mechanisms illustrate the complexity of microRNA-mediated control in diverse tumor microenvironments."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Hidekazu Hiramoto, Tomoki Muramatsu, Daisuke Ichikawa, et al.
