| HGNC Family | Non-coding RNAs |
| Name | microRNA 1264 |
| Description | microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009] |

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nMiR‐1264 has emerged as a pivotal regulatory molecule in the vascular system, influencing endothelial cell behavior and smooth muscle cell function. In one study investigating atherosclerotic plaque destabilization, endothelial cells treated with serum exosomes from patients with unstable carotid plaques exhibited downregulation of miR‐1264 in the presence of a circRNA (circRNA1006896), which in turn was linked to increased DNMT1 expression and consequent STAT3 phosphorylation. This cascade likely contributes to enhanced endothelial proliferation and migration, events that can promote plaque vulnerability."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn vascular smooth muscle cells, decreased levels of miR‐1264 were similarly implicated in dysregulated gene expression. Here, pro‐inflammatory stimuli such as TNF‐α and IGF‐1 reduced miR‐1264 expression, thereby alleviating its repression of DNMT1. The resultant DNMT1 upregulation induced hypermethylation of the SOCS3 promoter, suppressing SOCS3 expression and potentially promoting neointimal hyperplasia—a key process in restenosis following vascular injury."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nBeyond its roles in vascular pathology, miR‐1264 is also involved in the modulation of oncogenic processes. In colorectal cancer, for instance, the long noncoding RNA SOCS2‐AS1 acts by restraining miR‐1264, which leads to increased expression of the tumor‐suppressor gene SOCS2. This SOCS2‐AS1/miR‐1264/SOCS2 axis is associated with reduced cellular proliferation, migration, and invasion, thereby curtailing tumor progression."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "3"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nSimilarly, in gastric cancer, a circular RNA designated circ1322 functions as a sponge for miR‐1264.
