MIR1272 Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 1272
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]
Summary
{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nRecent studies have uncovered a tumor‐suppressive function of miR-1272 in prostate cancer, where its restoration in cancer cells reverts the mesenchymal phenotype, leading to reduced migration, invasion, and growth both in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, miR-1272 targets HIP1, an endocytic protein that modulates EGFR turnover and downstream AKT/ERK signaling, thereby also enhancing the tumor cells’ sensitivity to ionizing radiation. These findings suggest that therapeutic reconstitution of miR-1272 could potentially inhibit tumor progression and metastasis while improving radiotherapy outcomes."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn glioma, miR-1272 functions as a negative regulator of tumor progression. Overexpression of miR-1272 in glioma cell lines results in pronounced G0/G1 cell cycle arrest, leading to significant reductions in cell proliferation and migration. Here, ADAM9 was confirmed as a direct target of miR-1272, and its down-modulation subsequently influences the expression of CDCP1—another molecule implicated in the proliferative and migratory characteristics of glioma. The reversal of miR-1272’s inhibitory effects by restoring ADAM9 levels further reinforces the critical role of the miR-1272/ADAM9/CDCP1 axis in glioma pathology, making it a promising target for therapeutic intervention."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "2"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn the context of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), alterations in miRNA expression patterns, including those of miR-1272, have been implicated in tumor pathogenesis. Although the precise role of miR-1272 in HCC remains to be fully elucidated, its involvement in other malignancies supports the notion that similar regulatory mechanisms may contribute to HCC development, particularly against a background of chronic liver disease and cirrhosis. Further investigation into miR-1272’s regulatory networks could provide novel insights into HCC pathogenesis and unveil new avenues for targeted therapies."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "3"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Federica Rotundo, Denis Cominetti, Rihan El Bezawy, et al.
