MIR1288 Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 1288
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]
Summary
{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn colorectal cancer, miR‑1288 appears to play a significant role in regulating cell proliferation and cell cycle progression. In colon cancer cell lines, reduced endogenous levels of miR‑1288 were observed compared to normal colonic epithelial cells, yet forced overexpression of miR‑1288 led to increased proliferation and a greater fraction of cells in the G2–M phase. These findings indicate that alterations in miR‑1288 expression may be critical in the progression and staging of colorectal tumors."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn other cancer types, miR‑1288 is also implicated in promoting tumor cell growth. In glioblastoma, miR‑1288 is markedly upregulated, and its ectopic expression enhances cell proliferation, colony formation, and anchorage‑independent growth by targeting the tumor suppressor CYLD. In oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma, studies are examining how alterations in miR‑1288 expression affect cellular behavior and target interactions, further suggesting its involvement in oncogenic signaling pathways."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "2"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nBeyond its role in cancer proliferation, miR‑1288 also has important implications in non‐malignant conditions. In a genetic study of schizophrenia, a specific 3′‑UTR variant (rs7219) in the GRB2 gene was found to generate a binding site for miR‑1288, with the minor allele leading to reduced GRB2 expression and an increased risk of developing the disorder. Moreover, investigations in oral squamous cell carcinoma have highlighted a regulatory axis in which a circular RNA (hsa_circ_0096042) sponges miR‑1288, thereby modulating the expression of the tumor suppressor KRT4 and ultimately influencing tumor progression."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "4"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Vinod Gopalan, Suja Pillai, Faeza Ebrahimi, et al.
