MIR1908 Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 1908
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]

In osteosarcoma, its aberrant upregulation enhances cell proliferation, invasion, and tumor growth by directly repressing tumor suppressors (e.g., phosphatase and tensin homolog) and through modulation via the splicing factor SRSF3 and subsequent NF‑κB/NKIRAS2 signaling. Similarly, in glioma elevated miR‐1908 levels correlate with shorter patient survival by promoting proliferation, invasion and resistance to apoptosis via regulation of the SPRY4/RAF1 axis. Moreover, in cervical cancer upregulation of miR‐1908 increases cell growth and invasion by targeting histone deacetylase 10, while its clinical significance in breast cancer remains under investigation (‐."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "3", "end_ref": "8"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn a contrasting tumor context, miR‐1908 acts as a tumor suppressor in non‐small cell lung cancer by inhibiting cell proliferation. In human adipocytes, its levels increase during adipogenesis where it impedes terminal differentiation while enhancing cell proliferation, suggesting a role in metabolic regulation and obesity. In hepatocyte models, altered miR‐1908 expression affects energy homeostasis through modulation of key regulators such as AKT, mTOR, AMPK and its upstream kinase LKB1, and also impacts autophagy and mitochondrial function. Moreover, miR‐1908 influences tissue remodeling – in scar formation, it targets the scar suppressor Ski, thereby regulating fibroblast proliferation, collagen deposition and inflammatory marker expression; its involvement in renal fibrosis is also under exploration.
