MIR2053 Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 2053
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]

In one study, miR-2053 was among the circulating RNAs profiled in patient sera, suggesting its potential, albeit not fully defined, role in the context of MPM biomarker panels."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn esophageal cancer, miR-2053 has been functionally characterized and found to be downregulated in cancer cell lines. Restoration via overexpression of miR-2053 resulted in reduced cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, while simultaneously promoting apoptosis. These effects were mediated, at least in part, through the attenuation of epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) and upregulation of pro-apoptotic proteins. Mechanistically, miR-2053 suppresses the expression of KIF3C and interferes with the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, highlighting its tumor‐suppressive function. This work builds on broader research into microRNAs in esophageal carcinoma."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "2"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nBeyond its implications in cancer, miR-2053 also appears to play a regulatory role in non-neoplastic disease. In ulcerative colitis, a genetic variant (rs6214 C > T) within the insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) gene enhances the binding of miR-2053, leading to downregulated IGF-1 expression and an increased risk of disease severity. This finding underscores miR-2053's potential as a modulator of inflammatory disease processes and indicates its promise as a target for prognostic and therapeutic strategies."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "4"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Marwa Matboli, Ayman E Shafei, Mahmoud A Ali, et al.
