MIR2682 Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 2682
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nRecent studies at the MIR137/MIR2682 locus have revealed that genetic variation affecting noncoding enhancer regions can lead to reduced expression of both MIR137 and MIR2682. In one study focusing on schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, a rare enhancer single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) was found to significantly lower enhancer activity—by more than 50%—thereby predicting decreased expression of the MIR137/MIR2682 cluster. This reduction, likely mediated by altered binding of the transcription factor YY1, suggests that MIR2682, along with its partner MIR137, may play an important role in neuronal function and in the genetic susceptibility to these neuropsychiatric disorders."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nAnother study investigating head and neck squamous cell carcinoma examined the entire MIR137/MIR2682 locus, noting that a large CpG island encompassing most of the MIR137 gene extends downstream to just before MIR2682. This observation implies that epigenetic alterations at this shared genomic region could influence the expression of MIR2682 alongside MIR137, potentially impacting tumor suppressor functions in cancer. Although the specific biological role of MIR2682 in this context remains to be fully elucidated, its proximity to critical regulatory elements highlights its possible contribution to the gene regulatory network in head and neck cancer."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "2"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Jubao Duan, Jianxin Shi, Alessia Fiorentino, et al.
