| HGNC Family | Non-coding RNAs |
| Name | microRNA 2909 |
| Description | microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009] |

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nRecent studies have established miR-2909 as a multifaceted regulator of immune function. It plays a critical role in T‐lymphocyte differentiation and maturation, enhancing regulatory T‐cell populations and fostering a Th1‐skewed cytokine milieu. In addition, miR-2909 modulates key inflammatory pathways—regulating interferon production, SP1-dependent gene transcription, and NFκB signaling—and fine-tunes metabolic responses under stress conditions such as high glucose exposure by modulating mitochondrial uncoupling protein 2 expression. Its induction following arsenic exposure further underscores its role in orchestrating adaptive immune responses and effector immunoglobulin class switching."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "1", "end_ref": "7"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn the oncogenic landscape, miR-2909 emerges as a crucial mediator driving cancer progression. In prostate cancer, it is implicated in modulating androgen receptor signaling and undermining tumor‐suppressive TGFβ pathways by targeting TGFBR2, thereby facilitating cancer cell proliferation and survival even under low androgen conditions. This miRNA also affects additional oncogenic networks by impacting STAT1-dependent interferon‐related pathways. Collectively, these actions contribute to tumor aggressiveness and progression, as exemplified not only in prostate malignancies but also in other cancer types where altered miR-2909 expression links to deregulated cell cycle progression and impaired apoptotic responses."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "8", "end_ref": "10"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nFurthermore, miR-2909’s post-transcriptional modulation and selective loading into exosomes underscore its potential as a non-invasive biomarker and therapeutic target. The mechanisms that govern its 3'-end modifications appear to dictate its intercellular trafficking, which is observed across various tumor types including melanoma, non-muscle invasive bladder cancer, and breast cancer. In melanoma, deregulated miR-2909 contributes to mitochondrial dysfunction typical of the Warburg effect, while in bladder and breast cancer its interactions with androgen signaling and DNA repair gene variants further substantiate its role in tumorigenesis."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "11", "end_ref": "14"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Deepak Kaul, M Sasikala, A Raina "}, {"type": "b", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Regulatory role of miR-2909 in cell-mediated immune response."}]}, {"type": "t", "text": " "}, {"type": "i", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Cell Biochem Funct (2012)"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": " DOI: "}, {"type": "a", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "10.1002/cbf.2828"}], "href": "https://doi.org/10.1002/cbf.2828"}, {"type": "t", "text": " PMID: "}, {"type": "a", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "22504889"}], "href": "https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22504889"}]}, {"type": "r", "ref": 2, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Mansi Arora, Deepak Kaul, Yash Paul Sharma "}, {"type": "b", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Human coronary heart disease: importance of blood cellular miR-2909 RNomics."}]}, {"type": "t", "text": " "}, {"type": "i", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Mol Cell Biochem (2014)"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": " DOI: "}, {"type": "a", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "10.1007/s11010-014-2017-3"}], "href": "https://doi.org/10.1007/s11010-014-2017-3"}, {"type": "t", "text": " PMID: "}, {"type": "a", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "24634009"}], "href": "https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24634009"}]}, {"type": "r", "ref": 3, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Deepti Malik, Deepak Kaul, Nalini Chauhan, et al.
