MIR3159 Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 3159
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nA broad array of studies has delineated the critical roles of the renin‐angiotensin system (RAS) in regulating blood pressure, cardiac hypertrophy, vascular dysfunction, renal injury, and even central nervous system–mediated effects. In these works, activation of angiotensin II–dependent pathways—predominantly via the angiotensin type 1 receptor—has been shown to drive a cascade of events including oxidative stress, inflammatory cytokine production, fibrogenesis, and modulation of local paracrine/autocrine signaling. Such mechanisms are observed in diverse tissues including the kidney, heart, blood vessels, and brain, underscoring the system’s pivotal role in cardiovascular and metabolic regulation."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "1", "end_ref": "10"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nAdditional reports have expanded on these findings by dissecting the tissue‐ and cell type–specific actions of RAS components. These include novel insights into how angiotensin II receptors modulate reactive oxygen species production via NADPH oxidase, alter mitochondrial function in neurons, and interact with other receptor families—such as dopaminergic receptors in renal proximal tubule cells—to regulate blood pressure and inflammation. Furthermore, local RAS activation has been implicated in promoting tumor‐associated angiogenesis, extracellular matrix remodeling, and even in mediating the inflammatory milieu that underlies cardiovascular and renal pathology."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "11", "end_ref": "20"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nNotably, despite the extensive mechanistic dissection of angiotensin II–mediated signaling and its multifaceted roles in pathology across these studies, none of the provided abstracts address or even mention MIR3159. In other words, while these investigations define a robust framework for understanding RAS‐mediated processes—from oxidative stress and inflammation to tissue remodeling and neurohumoral regulation—they do not offer any data concerning the function of MIR3159. This absence highlights a gap in our present understanding; the potential regulatory role of MIR3159 on RAS components or related intracellular pathways remains unexplored.
