MIR3167 Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 3167
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]

Specifically, overexpression of miR-3167 suppresses cell proliferation and promotes apoptosis, indicating its anti‐oncogenic role. In prostate cancer cells, miR-3167 directly targets the mRNA of YWHAZ—a gene implicated in cancer progression—thereby reducing its expression and, consequently, hindering the malignant phenotypes of these cells."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nThe molecular mechanism underlying these effects involves a competitive interaction between miR-3167 and the long noncoding RNA FOXD1-AS1. FOXD1-AS1, which is abundantly expressed in prostate cancer cells, binds to miR-3167 within the cytoplasm, effectively sequestering it. As a result, the ability of miR-3167 to suppress YWHAZ expression is diminished, leading to an increase in YWHAZ levels and, in turn, facilitating cancer cell viability, proliferation, migration, and invasion. These insights highlight the delicate interplay between noncoding RNAs and microRNAs in regulating oncogenic pathways, suggesting that therapeutic strategies aimed at modulating miR-3167 or FOXD1-AS1 levels could be beneficial in managing prostate cancer."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Weilong Qu, Xuedong Wei, Haoyu Zhang, et al.
