MIR3180-5 Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 3180-5
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nRecent investigations have identified that miR-3180-5p plays a key role in mediating cellular responses to mechanical stress. In human bladder smooth muscle cells exposed to cyclic hydrostatic pressure, miR-3180-5p was found to be the most overexpressed microRNA. Its upregulation leads to the suppression of PODN (podocan), a protein involved in maintaining extracellular matrix integrity, which in turn alters downstream signaling. Specifically, the reduction of PODN correlates with increased expression of cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (cdk2) and decreased levels of p21, culminating in enhanced cell cycle progression and proliferation. This study underscores the importance of miR-3180-5p in mechanotransduction and highlights its potential as a therapeutic target or biomarker in conditions where cellular proliferation is dysregulated."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn a related context, systematic screening for serum-derived microRNA biomarkers in cancer research has expanded our understanding of chemotherapeutic resistance. Although the study on gastric cancer patients primarily focused on identifying differentially expressed serum miRNAs associated with cisplatin resistance and sensitivity, it opens the possibility that miR-3180-5p, given its regulatory role in cell proliferation, might be further investigated as part of such biomarker panels. Such exploratory studies are crucial for developing predictive tools for treatment effectiveness and personalizing chemotherapy, potentially linking miR-3180-5p’s mechanistic insights in cellular models to clinical outcomes in chemoresistant cancers."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "2"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nTogether, these findings illustrate the diverse biological roles of miR-3180-5p. On one hand, its mechanistic contributions to smooth muscle cell proliferation via modulation of the PODN–cdk2–p21 axis highlight its importance in tissue remodeling and pathology associated with mechanical stress. On the other, its potential utility as a component of serum miRNA biomarker panels in the context of chemotherapy resistance warrants further clinical investigation, thereby bridging basic cellular research with translational oncology.\n"}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Yi Sun, De-Yi Luo, Yu-Chun Zhu, et al.
