MIR3202-1 Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 3202-1
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]
Summary
{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nRecent studies have demonstrated that MIR3202‑1 functions as a critical regulator of cell survival via its modulation of the antiapoptotic factor FAIM2. In chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lowered levels of miR‑3202 in blood and T lymphocytes correlate with increased FAIM2 expression, heightened inflammatory cytokine production, and epithelial apoptosis, while its overexpression exerts a protective effect on bronchial epithelial cells. In a parallel investigation concerning facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD), miR‑3202 was shown to target FAIM2, and inhibition of miR‑3202 resulted in enhanced FAIM2 levels that contributed to DUX4‑induced cell death and impaired myoblast differentiation."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nGenetic analyses have further implicated MIR3202‑1 in oncogenesis; a functional variant within the miR‑3202 gene that affects its regulation of the MeCP2 protein is significantly associated with lung cancer, suggesting that alterations in MIR3202‑1 may serve both as a biomarker and as an influential factor in the development of malignancy."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "3"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nAdditional research places miR‑3202 within broader microRNA–mRNA networks involved in immune and developmental pulmonary conditions.
