| HGNC Family | Non-coding RNAs |
| Name | microRNA 371b |
| Description | microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009] |

In systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), for instance, elevated levels of miR-371b-5p in patient serum were significantly associated with disease activity, suggesting its utility in diagnosing and monitoring the disease’s clinical state. This upregulation in active SLE cases indicates that miR-371b-5p may serve as an accessible biomarker reflecting underlying immunological disturbances."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nBeyond its diagnostic promise in SLE, computational studies have revealed that miR-371b-5p is intricately involved in the regulation of apoptosis. In silico analyses indicate that miR-371b-5p targets apoptosis-related genes such as CASP7, with identified single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in both the gene’s 3′UTR and the miR-371b-5p sequence itself potentially altering this regulation. These findings suggest that variations in miR-371b-5p interactions might affect programmed cell death pathways, thereby contributing to various pathophysiological conditions."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "2"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn the context of oncology, miR-371b-5p functions as a tumor suppressor, particularly in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Studies have demonstrated that miR-371b-5p expression is diminished in TNBC cells, and its restoration significantly curbs cell growth, migration, and invasion. Mechanistic investigations revealed that miR-371b-5p directly targets cold shock domain-containing protein E1 (CSDE1), a regulator that in turn modulates RAC1 transcription. This suppression of the CSDE1/RAC1 axis underscores the microRNA’s capacity to interfere with oncogenic signaling pathways and highlights its potential as a prognostic biomarker in aggressive breast cancer subtypes."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "3"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Li Zeng, Jia-Li Wu, Li-Min Liu, et al.
