| HGNC Family | Non-coding RNAs |
| Name | microRNA 3978 |
| Description | microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009] |

They reveal that estrogen signaling modulates bone homeostasis through the control of osteoclast apoptosis and osteoblast gene transcription, influences the development and function of neural circuits that regulate reproduction, behavior, and neuroprotection, and governs metabolic as well as cardiovascular and immune responses. These effects are mediated by both classical nuclear actions of ERs and rapid membrane‐initiated steroid signaling, with distinct contributions attributable to receptor subtypes in specific cell types and tissues."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "1", "end_ref": "10"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nAlthough none of the provided abstracts explicitly mention MIR3978, by analogy with many microRNAs that fine‐tune gene expression, it is plausible that MIR3978 may function as a post‐transcriptional regulator within these estrogen‐mediated networks. In this speculative model, MIR3978 could target mRNAs encoding key components of the estrogen signaling cascade—including receptors, coactivators, or downstream effectors—to help calibrate responses such as osteoclast apoptosis, neuroendocrine feedback to gonadotropin‐releasing hormone neurons, and metabolic as well as reproductive tissue development. Such a modulatory role would be consistent with the tightly balanced regulatory “yin–yang” interplay between ERα and ERβ observed in bone and other tissues, as well as with the dual nuclear and membrane‐initiated steroid actions detailed in these studies."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "11", "end_ref": "19"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn sum, while the current collection of work does not directly address MIR3978, the constellation of estrogen receptor–dependent mechanisms uncovered—from the regulation of bone resorption and energy balance to neuroprotection and reproductive behaviors—raises the intriguing possibility that MIR3978 may serve as a novel, context‐dependent regulator modulating these pathways.
