MIR4271 Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 4271
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]

In one investigation, circulating miRNAs, including miR-4271, were evaluated as noninvasive biomarkers to distinguish between ischemic stroke patients and healthy controls. The serum levels of miR-4271, alongside miR-221-3p and miR-382-5p, were compared, suggesting a potential utility for miR-4271 in the early diagnosis and risk assessment of ischemic stroke."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn a separate study exploring the genetic regulation of lipid metabolism, miR-4271 was found to play a pivotal role in modulating the expression of apolipoprotein C-III (APOC3). A common variant (rs4225) within the APOC3 3′-UTR was shown to influence miR-4271 binding; the T allele enhanced the binding of miR-4271, leading to suppressed translation of APOC3. This molecular mechanism resulted in lower plasma APOC3 levels and, consequently, reduced triglyceride levels, contributing to a decreased risk of coronary heart disease."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "2"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Yaru Wang, Zhuolin Ma, Pengcheng Kan, et al.
