| HGNC Family | Non-coding RNAs |
| Name | microRNA 4299 |
| Description | microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009] |

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn studies of thyroid carcinoma, miR‐4299 has been identified as a critical regulator of tumor invasiveness. Its expression levels inversely correlate with the invasive phenotypes of follicular thyroid carcinoma cells, acting through the direct targeting of ST6GALNAC4—a member of the ST6GALNAC family—thereby modulating altered sialylation patterns that are closely associated with tumor progression. This molecular interaction suggests that miR‐4299 may serve both as a prognostic biomarker and as a potential therapeutic target in the modulation of tumorigenicity in thyroid cancer."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n \nIn non‐small cell lung cancer, research has revealed that miR‐4299 expression is significantly correlated with clinicopathological features and patient prognosis. Alterations in its expression appear to influence cellular behaviors such as proliferation, migration, and invasion, possibly through the modulation of key components of the PTEN/AKT/PI3K signaling pathway. These findings point to a tumor suppressive role for miR‐4299 in NSCLC, where its downregulation may contribute to enhanced tumor aggressiveness."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "2"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\nIn pancreatic cancer, miR‐4299 is markedly downregulated compared to normal tissues, a change that contributes to tumor proliferation, invasion, and immune escape. Functional investigations have demonstrated that miR‐4299 exerts its suppressive effects via direct targeting of ADAM17; restoring ADAM17 expression can reverse these inhibitory effects. Consequently, the miR‐4299/ADAM17 axis emerges as an important regulatory mechanism, suggesting that miR‐4299 holds promise as both a biomarker and a therapeutic agent in pancreatic cancer management."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "3"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Xiaolong Miao, Li Jia, Huimin Zhou, et al.
