| Name | microRNA 4436a |
| Description | microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009] |

Initially characterized in the retina and pineal gland, SOUL binds heme with high affinity and undergoes a distinct oligomeric transition—from a dimer in the apo‐form to a hexamer upon heme binding—exhibiting a 6‐coordinate low-spin heme configuration. Notably, the binding involves a critical histidine residue (His42), whose mutation abolishes heme affinity, suggesting that SOUL’s structure facilitates specific axial heme coordination that sets it apart from related proteins such as p22HBP."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nFurther insights into SOUL’s function emerged from investigations into its protein–protein interactions. The heme-binding protein interacts with apoptosis-linked gene 2 (ALG-2) in a Ca2+-dependent manner, forming a 1:1 complex characterized by a significant conformational change and a large negative heat capacity change during binding. Mutagenesis studies pinpointed crucial residues (such as Phe100 in SOUL and Trp57 in ALG-2) essential for proper interaction dynamics. These findings suggest that through its ability to bind heme and engage in regulated interactions with proteins like ALG-2, SOUL may play a role in modulating cellular responses, potentially linking heme metabolism to pathways involved in Ca2+-mediated signal transduction and apoptosis."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "2"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Emiko Sato, Ikuko Sagami, Takeshi Uchida, et al.
