| HGNC Family | Non-coding RNAs |
| Name | microRNA 4504 |
| Description | microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009] |

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nThe provided body of literature primarily focuses on the roles of selenium‐dependent glutathione peroxidase (GPX) isoenzymes—most notably GPX1 and GPX2—in regulating oxidative stress, apoptosis, and inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. In these studies, GPX deficiencies (either singly or doubly knocked out) lead to enhanced mucosal inflammation, increased susceptibility to ileocolitis, and tumorigenesis, particularly under conditions of altered selenium nutrition and changes in microbial colonization. These findings underscore the importance of GPX-mediated antioxidant defenses in maintaining intestinal homeostasis."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "1", "end_ref": "5"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nAdditional investigations extend these observations to other tissues and disease processes. For example, studies in murine models of emphysema and allergic airway inflammation highlight that redox-sensitive transcription factors like Nrf2 regulate antioxidant responses—inducing GPX2 among other cytoprotective enzymes—in response to environmental challenges such as cigarette smoke and high‐fat diets. Collectively, these works reveal that a balanced oxidative stress response is pivotal not only for gut health but also for protecting the lung and other tissues from inflammation and damage."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "6", "end_ref": "12"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nDespite the depth of these investigations into GPX isoforms and redox homeostasis, none of the cited abstracts mention or address the function of MIR4504.
