MIR4697 Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 4697
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]
Summary
{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nRecent genome‐wide association studies have implicated MIR4697 as a genetic locus modulating Parkinson’s disease (PD) risk. Several independent studies in Taiwanese, Iranian, and Han Chinese cohorts found that the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs329648 within MIR4697 is significantly associated with PD. In one study, a recessive model indicated that the TT genotype of rs329648 was marginally protective against PD, whereas other analyses reported that the T allele occurred more frequently among PD patients—particularly in male subjects—supporting its role in PD susceptibility and suggesting ethnic‐ and sex‐dependent effects. These observations are further driving investigations into the mechanistic links through which MIR4697 may contribute to PD pathogenesis."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "1", "end_ref": "4"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn addition to its involvement in neurodegenerative disease, MIR4697 also plays a functional role in ovarian cancer. Recent findings have demonstrated that hsa‐miR‐4697-3p is a key component of a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network involving MNX1-AS1 and HOXB13. This network appears to modulate chemotherapy response by influencing drug metabolism and neural signaling pathways, thereby affecting platinum sensitivity.
