| Name | microRNA 4720 |
| Description | microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009] |

In particular, these studies elucidate how alcohol dehydrogenases—especially ADH3—mediate the oxidation of retinol to retinal, a critical first step in the synthesis of retinoic acid which is essential for tissue development and cellular growth."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nThe research also shows that ADH3, being a ubiquitously expressed enzyme, plays a central, though secondary, role in retinol utilization and clearance compared to other ADH isoforms. Its activity influences not only normal development via retinoid signaling but also impacts pathological conditions such as vitamin A toxicity, where a deficiency in ADH1 predominantly causes toxicity issues, while ADH3’s involvement is moderate yet important in metabolic regulation."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "2"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn addition, ADH3 expression in non-hepatic tissues is linked with broader physiological roles including the modulation of liver fibrosis. Specifically, its expression in hepatic stellate cells and natural killer cells regulates fibrogenesis by affecting collagen production and immune responses; inhibition or genetic depletion of ADH3 attenuates fibrosis and enhances NK cell activity. Moreover, low-level expression of ADH3 along the gastrointestinal tract suggests a role in the defense against toxic aldehydes and alcohols."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "3"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Andrei Molotkov, Xiaohong Fan, Louise Deltour, et al.
