| Name | microRNA 5100 |
| Description | microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009] |

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nStudies in lung cancer have revealed that miR‑5100 is aberrantly overexpressed and functions as an oncogenic regulator. In lung cancer tissues and cell lines, elevated miR‑5100 levels promote cell proliferation, colony formation, and tumor growth by facilitating the G1/S cell cycle transition. Mechanistic investigations identified Rab6 as a direct target of miR‑5100, with its inhibition contributing to these oncogenic effects. In addition, heightened miR‑5100 expression has been detected in lung cancer stem cells, where it enhances cancer stem cell properties and mediates resistance to cisplatin by reducing mitochondrial apoptosis, and may also serve as a potential prognostic marker in non‑small cell lung cancer."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "1", "end_ref": "3"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn other tumor types, miR‑5100 appears to exhibit context‑dependent roles. In pancreatic cancer, overexpression of miR‑5100 was found to suppress metastatic behaviors such as cell migration and invasion by directly targeting podocalyxin‑like 1, thereby revealing an anti‑metastatic function. In gastric cancer, miR‑5100 targets genes (including DEK) to modulate autophagy and apoptosis through the AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway, while additional reports indicate that miR‑5100 may also influence the proliferation of cancer cells and the differentiation of osteoblasts."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "4", "end_ref": "6"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nBeyond its roles in cancer, miR‑5100 has emerged as a promising biomarker in several non‑malignant clinical settings. In systemic lupus erythematosus, altered serum miR‑5100 levels correlate with disease activity, suggesting potential utility in diagnosis and disease monitoring. In acute kidney injury models, reduced renal and serum miR‑5100 expression is associated with enhanced apoptosis and tissue damage, while administration of miR‑5100 mimics offers protection against injury.
