| Name | microRNA 5189 |
| Description | microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009] |

In one study investigating deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the lower extremity, the authors examined the role and underlying mechanisms of miR-5189-3p. Although the study primarily focused on exploring its contribution to thrombotic events, it underscored the microRNA’s importance in vascular pathology, prompting further inquiry into its mechanistic functions."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "In another study focused on laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC), miR-5189-3p was found to be significantly down-regulated in tumor tissues and cell lines. Mechanistically, miR-5189-3p exerts its tumor-suppressive effects by directly targeting and down-regulating EIF5A2, a gene implicated in promoting oncogenesis; reintroduction of EIF5A2 was able to rescue the tumor cells from the inhibitory effects of miR-5189-3p."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "2"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "Collectively, these studies highlight the multifaceted role of miR-5189-3p as both a potential modulator of thrombotic processes in DVT and a tumor suppressor in LSCC.
