MIR518E Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 518e
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn studies of progressive supranuclear palsy it was found that MIR518E is significantly upregulated in patients’ forebrains, where its elevated expression correlates with the repression of several key target genes. Specifically, the targets of MIR518E include CPEB1, JAZF1, and RAP1B, whose down‐regulation is indicative of a microRNA-mediated mechanism that may alter diverse cellular processes. These findings suggest that MIR518E functions as a negative regulator, exerting its effects by binding to and reducing the levels of its target transcripts, thereby potentially contributing to the neuropathological changes observed in the disease."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nBy repressing genes implicated in various cellular functions, MIR518E appears to participate in an epigenetic regulatory network that might affect neuronal signaling, survival, or differentiation.
