MIR548U Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 548u
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nA survey of these developmental studies reveals a complex genetic circuitry in which key transcription factors and regulatory elements critically determine cell identity and organ patterning. Several investigations have focused on the role of Hox genes in the vertebrate axial skeleton and kidney organogenesis – for instance, targeted disruption of Hox10 and Hox11 paralogs disrupts lumbar vertebral and kidney capsule formation, while other studies delineate Hox‐dependent mechanisms in rib repression and motor pathway integration in the developing hindbrain and spinal cord. These findings collectively underscore the importance of tightly regulated transcriptional programs during embryogenesis."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "1", "end_ref": "5"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn parallel, an extensive body of work in retinal development has detailed how homeobox genes such as CHX10/VSX2, Mitf, Blimp1, and Pax6—and their interplay with signaling factors like FGF and SHH—govern retinal progenitor cell proliferation, fate specification, and compartmental maintenance. The studies demonstrate that loss or misexpression of these factors leads to profound alterations ranging from microphthalmia and disrupted lamination to ectopic pigmentation and faulty photoreceptor versus bipolar cell differentiation.
