| Name | microRNA 5688 |
| Description | microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009] |

In human non‐small cell lung cancer, miR‑5688—investigated alongside miR‑495—has been implicated in modulating the oncogenic pathways activated by low oxygen tension. Although the precise targets and downstream mechanisms of miR‑5688 remain to be fully elucidated, its dysregulation under hypoxic conditions suggests that it may contribute to tumor progression by affecting key signaling networks in the tumor microenvironment."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn parallel, research into neuronal plasticity has highlighted the importance of a distinct set of molecules, such as the Plasticity Related Gene family, in orchestrating axonal and filopodia outgrowth during development and in response to injury. Notably, while these studies demonstrate a robust framework for neural growth and regeneration, they do not report any function for miR‑5688 in the nervous system. This distinction underlines the context‐dependent roles of microRNAs, with miR‑5688 being specifically relevant in the setting of cancer rather than in neural repair processes."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "2"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nCollectively, these findings underscore the multifaceted and contextually sensitive roles of microRNAs. Whereas miR‑5688 emerges as a potential regulator in the hypoxic tumor microenvironment of non‐small cell lung cancer, the molecular machinery driving neural plasticity relies on a separate repertoire of genes and proteins. Continued investigation into the precise functions and targets of miR‑5688 could not only enhance our understanding of tumor biology but also aid in the development of targeted therapeutic strategies."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Meng Zhao, Jiao Chang, Ran Liu, et al.
