| Description | microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009] |

Under high‑glucose conditions, MEG3 and CYB5R2 are upregulated while miR‑6720‑5p is downregulated, and functional assays revealed that reduction of MEG3 or CYB5R2 promotes endothelial proliferation, migration, and tube formation. Notably, intervening with miR‑6720‑5p was able to reverse the pro‑angiogenic effects induced by MEG3 knockdown, an outcome that was negated by silencing CYB5R2—underscoring that miR‑6720‑5p’s regulation of CYB5R2 is critical in modulating neovascularization in diabetic retinopathy."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\nIn gastric cancer, miR‑6720‑5p is similarly integral to a regulatory axis controlling cell proliferation and apoptosis. Here, the long non‑coding RNA ACTA2‑AS1 functions as a molecular sponge for miR‑6720‑5p, thereby relieving miR‑6720‑5p‑mediated suppression of its target gene ESRRB. The resultant upregulation of ESRRB contributes to the inhibition of gastric cancer cell proliferation and the induction of apoptosis, highlighting a tumor‑suppressive mechanism driven by the ACTA2‑AS1–miR‑6720‑5p–ESRRB axis."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "2"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Jinpeng Chen, Lin Liao, Huiyong Xu, et al.
