| Name | microRNA 6852 |
| Description | microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009] |

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nAlthough none of the abstracts explicitly mention MIR6852, the body of work on bestrophin proteins suggests that MIR6852 may impact a family of Ca2+-dependent anion channels that are crucial for maintaining epithelial ion homeostasis. In particular, studies on bestrophin genes indicate that these channels mediate the transport of both Cl⁻ and HCO3⁻, with mutations in bestrophin‐1 significantly disrupting anion flux across the retinal pigment epithelium—a defect that may underlie several retinal pathologies. Disruption of bestrophin‐2 has also been characterized in murine models, underscoring its essential physiological role."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "Dissection of the channel’s biophysical properties has revealed that the Asp‐rich domain in bestrophins is critical for Ca2+ binding and subsequent activation of the Cl⁻ current. In airway epithelia, both bestrophin‐1 and bestrophin‐2 contribute to Ca2+-activated Cl⁻ secretion, as evidenced by reduced currents when one or both paralogs are absent or knocked down. This molecular insight into Ca2+ regulation offers a mechanistic explanation for altered anion secretion observed in disease contexts such as cystic fibrosis and other disorders linked to dysregulated ion transport."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "3"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "In other epithelial systems, the role of bestrophin channels extends to the regulation of bicarbonate transport. In the colonic mucosa, bestrophin‐2, localized basolaterally in goblet cells, appears to be pivotal for cholinergically stimulated HCO3⁻ secretion—suggesting an unanticipated role in modulating luminal pH and hydration. Moreover, in the olfactory neuroepithelium, bestrophin‐2 expression is associated with the differentiation of sensory neurons and the maturation of their cilia, which are imperative for odorant detection. Collectively, these findings imply that if MIR6852 influences bestrophin expression or function, it may impact diverse physiological processes by modulating Ca2+-dependent Cl⁻ and HCO3⁻ fluxes across multiple tissues."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "5"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Benjamin Bakall, Precious McLaughlin, J Brett Stanton, et al.
