| Name | microRNA 6855 |
| Description | microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009] |

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nAlthough none of the provided abstracts mention MIR6855 explicitly, a careful analysis of the diverse roles of ADAMTS‐4–centered pathways suggests that MIR6855 may function as a regulatory microRNA modulating ADAMTS‐4 activity. ADAMTS‐4 is repeatedly shown to play critical roles in extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling across different tissues—for example, in cartilage degradation in osteoarthritis and arthritis models, in ovarian follicle development, and in proteolytic processing of key ECM proteins such as versican and Reelin (see, for instance, studies on ADAMTS expression and function in the mouse ovary, cartilage, and brain ["}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "1", "end_ref": "7"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "])."}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nMoreover, several of these studies underscore that ADAMTS‐4’s expression and proteolytic activity are finely tuned in both physiological and pathological settings. For example, in the context of aortic aneurysm development and vascular inflammation, ADAMTS‐4 levels correlate with proteoglycan degradation and tissue remodeling, while in the central nervous system its activity impacts synaptic function and myelination. Such regulatory cascades are further modulated by microRNAs in other systems—for instance, miR‐126a‐5p and miR‐329‐3p have been shown to limit ADAMTS‐4 expression in vascular and hepatic injury models (see ["}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "8"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "]). By analogy, MIR6855 may serve as another post‐transcriptional regulator that ensures a balanced ADAMTS‐4 activity, thereby protecting against excessive ECM degradation and tissue damage."}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nFinally, ADAMTS‐4 is also implicated in processes such as axonal myelination, tumor angiogenesis, and tissue repair—in models ranging from oligodendrocyte differentiation and remyelination to melanoma progression and fetal membrane rupture at parturition (see, for example, studies that detail its roles in the CNS, in olfactory ensheathing cell–mediated spinal cord repair, in NG2 cleavage, and in amnion remodeling ["}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "10", "end_ref": "13"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "]). Hence, by influencing the protease’s spatial and temporal activity, MIR6855—if operating in these networks—could be critical for fine‐tuning the balance between necessary matrix turnover and pathological tissue degradation. Collectively, these findings imply that MIR6855 might represent a potential regulatory node in ADAMTS‐4–mediated ECM homeostasis during development, injury, and disease."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "1", "end_ref": "13"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "JoAnne S Richards, Immaculada Hernandez-Gonzalez, Ignacio Gonzalez-Robayna, et al.
