MIR718 Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 718
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nRecent studies have revealed that miR-718 plays a critical role in modulating tumor progression by directly controlling key mediators of cell growth and angiogenesis. In ovarian cancer, for example, miR-718 is expressed at low levels and inversely correlates with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Restoration of miR-718 expression directly represses VEGF levels and reduces downstream phospho‐AKT signaling, thereby inhibiting tumor proliferation both in vitro and in vivo."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn the context of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), evidence indicates that miR-718 functions within a regulatory network that promotes malignant behavior. Two independent studies demonstrate that in HCC, elevated levels of miR-718 lead to downregulation of the tumor suppressor PTEN. One study showed that miR-718 overexpression was associated with enhanced cellular proliferation and poorer survival, while another established an inverse relationship between the long non-coding RNA SEMA3B-AS1 and miR-718, with miR-718 dampening PTEN expression and further promoting cell growth."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "2"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nMoreover, investigations in papillary thyroid and gastric cancers support the oncogenic activity of miR-718. In papillary thyroid cancer, miR-718 has been implicated in increasing cell malignancy, whereas in gastric cancer, its upregulation not only correlates with reduced PTEN expression but also enhances phosphatidylinositide 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/Akt) signaling, leading to increased proliferation and invasion. Together, these findings suggest that miR-718 exerts context-dependent effects that contribute significantly to tumorigenesis by modulating critical signaling pathways."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "4"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Ruobing Leng, Lang Zha, Liangdan Tang "}, {"type": "b", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "MiR-718 represses VEGF and inhibits ovarian cancer cell progression."}]}, {"type": "t", "text": " "}, {"type": "i", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "FEBS Lett (2014)"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": " DOI: "}, {"type": "a", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "10.1016/j.febslet.2014.04.040"}], "href": "https://doi.org/10.1016/j.febslet.2014.04.040"}, {"type": "t", "text": " PMID: "}, {"type": "a", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "24815691"}], "href": "https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24815691"}]}, {"type": "r", "ref": 2, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Zhong-Dong Wang, Fan-Yong Qu, Yuan-Yuan Chen, et al.
