| HGNC Family | Non-coding RNAs |
| Name | microRNA 7844 |
| Description | microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009] |

It facilitates the delivery of ubiquitinated substrates to the proteasome and also contributes to autophagy by interacting via its ubiquitin‐associated domain with autophagic membranes, thereby protecting cells under conditions of nutrient stress. Loss of UBQLN2 function has been shown to delay autophagosome maturation and compromise the timely clearance of misfolded proteins, underscoring its importance in maintaining proteostasis."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "1", "end_ref": "5"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "Dis parturient et imperceptible, UBQLN2 is also critically involved in mitigating neurodegeneration by participating in the clearance of misfolded and aggregated proteins linked to diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and polyglutamine disorders. In neuronal systems, UBQLN2 cooperates with chaperones like HSP70 to recognize aberrant protein aggregates—including dipeptide repeat proteins, mutant polyglutamine stretches, and cytoplasmic accumulations of TDP‐43—and targets them for proteasomal degradation. However, pathogenic mutations in UBQLN2 hinder these interactions, resulting in the accumulation of toxic inclusions, cognitive deficits and motor neuron loss as observed in several animal models."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "6", "end_ref": "12"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "Recent proteomic and genetic studies have further expanded our understanding of UBQLN2 by revealing its role in selectively regulating a broad spectrum of proteins—from ubiquitin ligases to retroelement‐derived factors—and thereby modulating key signaling pathways.
