MIR8052 Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 8052
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]
Summary
{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nAlthough none of the provided abstracts mention MIR8052 explicitly, the collective body of work on monoamine oxidase–related pathways suggests a role for regulatory molecules—potentially including microRNAs such as MIR8052—in fine‐tuning the expression and activity of MAO‐A. MAO‐A is a mitochondrial enzyme responsible for the oxidative degradation of key monoamine neurotransmitters (serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine) and is critically involved in circadian regulation, mood modulation, and behavioral responses. Several studies report that factors including circadian clock components and transcriptional regulators (for example, SIRT1 and R1) modulate MAO‐A promoter activity and hence influence neurotransmitter levels and behavioral phenotypes such as reactive aggression and mood‐related disturbances."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "1", "end_ref": "3"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nOther investigations have focused on the role of MAO‐A in non‐neuronal settings—for instance, its contribution to reactive oxygen species generation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and apoptosis in cardiomyocytes. These studies demonstrate that aberrant MAO‐A activity is linked to altered sphingolipid metabolism and impaired autophagic processes, ultimately contributing to cardiac injury and age‐related cellular senescence. Regulatory inputs that control MAO‐A expression may therefore be crucial not only in modulating neurotransmission but also in maintaining cellular homeostasis under metabolic or stress conditions."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "4", "end_ref": "6"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn the realm of neurodevelopment and behavioral adaptation, excess or deficient MAO‐A activity has been associated with disrupted formation of neural circuits (as seen in altered thalamocortical projections and sensory cortical organization) and with behavioral phenotypes relevant to autism spectrum and impulse control disorders. Although the reviewed abstracts predominantly address protein and transcription factor regulators of MAO‐A, by analogy a microRNA such as MIR8052 could be hypothesized to partake in the post‐transcriptional regulation of MAO‐A expression—thereby indirectly influencing neuronal proliferation, circuit refinement, and subsequent behavioral outcomes including social interaction, aggression, and stress responsiveness."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "7", "end_ref": "9"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nTaken together, while the function of MIR8052 is not directly delineated in these studies, its potential involvement in the post‐transcriptional regulation of MAO‐A (and perhaps related pathways) emerges as an attractive hypothesis. Regulation of MAO‐A by microRNAs could influence multiple physiological systems—from circadian and metabolic control to neurodevelopment and stress adaptation—and may thus contribute to disease states such as depression, anxiety, autism spectrum disorders, and cardiac dysfunction."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "10", "end_ref": "18"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Gabriele Hampp, Jürgen A Ripperger, Thijs Houben, et al.
