MIR8053 Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 8053
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]
Summary
{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nAlthough none of the provided studies explicitly mention MIR8053, a synthesis of these findings on profilin 2 (PFN2) and its regulation by microRNAs and interacting proteins suggests that MIR8053 may function as a post‐transcriptional modulator of PFN2. In neurons, PFN2 serves as a key regulator in actin dynamics, influencing neurite outgrowth, synaptic actin polymerization, and receptor trafficking. For example, dysregulated phosphorylation of PFN2a has been linked to impaired neurite extension in spinal muscular atrophy, while distinct PFN2 interactions help fine‐tune synaptic physiology and receptor recycling."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "1", "end_ref": "8"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn addition to its neuronal functions, PFN2 plays roles in diverse cellular systems including cancer, iron metabolism, muscle development, and stem cell biology. Studies demonstrate that PFN2 contributes to membrane trafficking in immune cells and modulates glycolysis and irradiation resistance in breast cancer, while its dysregulation affects myoblast proliferation and apoptosis via p53‐dependent pathways. Moreover, PFN2 levels have been shown to be controlled by iron regulatory proteins and to affect endocytosis and signal transduction in embryonic stem cells. Collectively, these functions support a model in which finely tuned PFN2 expression is essential for coordinating cytoskeletal dynamics and cellular homeostasis."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "9", "end_ref": "15"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nA recurring theme across these studies is the importance of microRNA‐mediated regulation of PFN2. Although the specific role of MIR8053 is not directly addressed in the provided abstracts, related work—such as the targeting of PFN2 by the miR‐290 family or the modulation of PFN2 levels by miR‐223‐3p in cancer—suggests that a microRNA like MIR8053 could similarly influence PFN2 expression. By repressing PFN2, MIR8053 might indirectly regulate actin polymerization, cytoskeletal reorganization, and membrane dynamics, thereby impacting neuronal plasticity, cell motility, and differentiation. Furthermore, such regulation could have broad implications for pathologies ranging from neurodegenerative diseases to cancer and developmental disorders."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "16"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Anna Nölle, Andre Zeug, Jeroen van Bergeijk, et al.
