MIR888 Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 888
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]

Expression profiling in syngeneic human prostate cancer cell lines revealed that miR-888 is markedly overexpressed in highly metastatic PC3-ML cells compared to non‑invasive counterparts, and its elevated levels are also described in primary prostate tumors—especially in those exhibiting seminal vesicle invasion—as well as in expressed prostatic secretions from patients with high‑grade disease. This pattern of overexpression indicates that miR-888 may serve as a potential diagnostic biomarker for aggressive prostate cancer."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nFunctional studies demonstrate that the overexpression of miR-888 enhances key oncogenic properties in vitro by increasing cell proliferation, migration, and colony formation in prostate cancer cell lines, whereas its inhibition significantly impedes these processes. Mechanistically, miR-888 contributes to cancer progression by downregulating tumor suppressor genes such as RBL1 and SMAD4, thereby promoting pathways that favor malignant transformation and metastasis. These findings underscore the potential of miR-888 not only as a biomarker but also as a therapeutic target in aggressive prostate cancer"}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}]}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Holly Lewis, Raymond Lance, Dean Troyer, et al.
