MIR891B Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 891b
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]

In this context, miR-891b functions as a tumor suppressor by directly targeting the Cbl‐b gene, which in turn leads to an upregulation of the tumor suppressor protein p21, ultimately inhibiting PDAC cell proliferation. Moreover, its expression levels have been closely linked with patient prognosis, establishing miR-891b as an independent predictor of overall survival in PDAC cases."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "In viral infections such as those caused by Enterovirus 71 (EV71), miR-891b participates in a regulatory axis that modulates apoptosis. Here, the long noncoding RNA lnc-IRAK3-3 is down-regulated during EV71 infection, and its ability to sequester miR-891b is diminished. The resulting increase in free miR-891b leads to the suppression of GADD45β expression, a change that contributes to the regulation of caspase3 and PARP cleavage, thereby influencing the apoptotic process and protecting host cells from excessive damage."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "2"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "Additionally, miR-891b has been implicated in breast cancer, where it appears to sensitize cancer cells to alkylating chemotherapeutic drugs through mechanisms involving poly(ADP-ribose) polymerases (PARPs). This suggests that miR-891b plays a broader role in modulating cellular responses to DNA damage and chemotherapy across different cancer types."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "3"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": ""}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Qian Dong, Ce Li, Xiaofang Che, et al.
