MIR937 Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 937
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]
Summary
{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nMIR937, which produces the mature miR‐937‑5p, has emerged as an important regulatory RNA in several types of cancer. In colorectal cancer, miR‐937‑5p is overexpressed and targets the tumor suppressor TIMP3, thereby facilitating tumor proliferation, invasion, migration, and angiogenesis. Similarly, in lung cancer, elevated miR‐937 levels promote both anchorage‐dependent and ‑independent cell growth by downregulating INPP4B and upregulating pro‐proliferative factors such as CCND1 and c‐Myc. In breast cancer, miR‐937‑5p functions in a proto‐oncogenic manner by directly repressing SOX17, leading to enhanced cell cycle progression and S‑phase accumulation, while mechanistic evaluations in hepatocellular carcinoma reveal that miR‑937 overexpression is associated with increased cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, marking it as a poor prognostic indicator. In high‑grade serous ovarian carcinoma, amplification of the MIR937 gene elevates miR‑937‑5p expression, which in turn promotes autophagy and proliferation via enhanced binding to the FBXO16 transcript and subsequent modulation of the ULK1 pathway. Additional studies in colon cancer further support the clinical significance of miR‑937 in tumor progression."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "1", "end_ref": "6"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nApart from its functional involvement in oncogenesis, miR‑937 has been evaluated as a promising diagnostic and prognostic biomarker across a variety of clinical settings. In peripheral blood, altered miR‑937 levels are being investigated for their utility in differentiating patients with metabolic disorders from healthy controls, as well as in the context of Kawasaki disease, where its expression in mononuclear cells may help in identifying children at risk for coronary artery dilation. Moreover, ethnic‑specific analyses in breast cancer have identified miR‑937 as one of a panel of miRNAs that correlate significantly with both diagnostic and prognostic outcomes."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "7", "end_ref": "9"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nMechanistically, deregulation of miR‑937‑5p contributes to tumor progression by interfering with multiple cellular pathways. In colorectal cancer, a circular RNA (circFNDC3B) acts as a sponge for miR‑937‑5p, thereby mitigating its oncogenic effects and restoring TIMP3 levels. In lung and breast cancers, miR‑937‑5p modulates cell cycle regulators—including cyclins and key transcription factors—that drive malignancy. In ovarian carcinoma, gene copy number amplification of MIR937 reinforces its oncogenic role by enhancing autophagy via the FBXO16/ULK1 axis. These findings collectively underscore the multifaceted role of MIR937 in cancer biology and highlight its potential both as a therapeutic target and as an informative biomarker."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "1", "end_ref": "6"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Li Zhang, Daxiong Zeng, Ying Chen, et al.
