MIR938 Gene

HGNC Family Non-coding RNAs
Name microRNA 938
Description microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nMIR938 is emerging as a key post‐transcriptional regulator whose genetic variants modulate cancer susceptibility and progression. In gastric cancer, a polymorphism (rs2505901 T>C) in the pri-miRNA form of MIR938 is associated with a decreased overall risk, suggesting a protective effect in this context. In colorectal cancer, MIR938 is upregulated and acts as an oncogene by directly targeting the tumor suppressor PHLPP2, thereby promoting cell proliferation through the enhanced expression of c-Myc and Cyclin D1. Similarly, genetic variants of MIR938 have been implicated in neuroblastoma risk, while broader association studies have explored its contribution to gastric cancer susceptibility."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "1", "end_ref": "4"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn addition to its oncogenic roles, MIR938 and its polymorphic variants influence reproductive and developmental disorders by altering target gene binding. In primary ovarian insufficiency, a seed sequence polymorphism (miR-938G>A) modifies the binding affinity to the gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor (GnRHR) mRNA, affecting the regulation of key reproductive pathways. Similar alterations in binding affinity have been reported in cases of idiopathic recurrent pregnancy loss, where specific MIR938 allele combinations appear to confer protective effects. Moreover, in Hirschsprung disease, the rs2505901 T>C polymorphism in MIR938 is associated with an increased disease risk, particularly in patients with the short-segment subtype, underscoring the diverse pathological contexts influenced by MIR938 regulation."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "5", "end_ref": "7"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "rg", "children": [{"type": "r", "ref": 1, "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "Tomiyasu Arisawa, Tomomitsu Tahara, Hisakazu Shiroeda, et al.
