OR2J1 Gene

HGNC Family G protein-coupled receptors
Name olfactory receptor, family 2, subfamily J, member 1 (gene/pseudogene)
Description Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose, to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of a smell. The olfactory receptor proteins are members of a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) arising from single coding-exon genes. Olfactory receptors share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for the recognition and G protein-mediated transduction of odorant signals. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. This olfactory receptor gene is a segregating pseudogene, where some individuals have an allele that encodes a functional olfactory receptor, while other individuals have an allele encoding a protein that is predicted to be non-functional. {"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nA review of the provided abstracts reveals a broad investigation into the local regulation of glucocorticoid action through the pre‐receptor interconversion of inactive to active steroids. In many of these studies, the enzyme 11β‐hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β‐HSD1) plays a central role in modulating intracellular glucocorticoid concentrations in key metabolic tissues such as adipose tissue, liver, skeletal muscle, and even in certain immune cell populations. In these contexts, increased 11β‐HSD1 activity is linked to adverse metabolic features including insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, visceral adiposity, and features reminiscent of Cushing’s syndrome, whereas its inhibition or genetic deletion tends to yield improvements in glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, and even tissue vascularization."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "1", "end_ref": "10"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nAdditional reports focus on the tissue‐specific consequences of altered glucocorticoid metabolism. These include studies examining the dual roles of 11β‐HSD1 in regulating local hormone activation in adipocytes (thereby affecting adipogenesis and inflammatory cytokine profiles), in modulating hepatic gluconeogenesis, in influencing neural and memory functions through hippocampal corticosterone regeneration, and even in governing muscle protein catabolism via ubiquitin ligase expression. Collectively, the data underscore that disruption of the tightly controlled balance of glucocorticoid metabolism has repercussions for metabolic syndrome, inflammation, myocardial healing, and tissue remodeling."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "11", "end_ref": "20"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nNotably, none of the abstracts provide any insight into the biological function of OR2J1.
