OR52M1 Gene

HGNC Family G protein-coupled receptors
Name olfactory receptor, family 52, subfamily M, member 1
Description Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose, to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of a smell. The olfactory receptor proteins are members of a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) arising from single coding-exon genes. Olfactory receptors share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for the recognition and G protein-mediated transduction of odorant signals. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nThe collective findings indicate that the serotonin 5‑HT2B receptor plays a multifaceted role in both physiological homeostasis and pathological conditions across several organ systems. In the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems, 5‑HT2B receptor activation is pivotal for mediating vascular remodeling and proliferation that underlies the development of pulmonary arterial hypertension and contributes to cardiac hypertrophy and dilated cardiomyopathy; its overexpression in human pulmonary arteries and its activation by compounds such as dexfenfluramine or MDMA underscore its contribution to sympathetic overstimulation‐dependent heart failure and drug‐induced toxicity. These studies further implicate 5‑HT2B signaling in the regulation of inflammatory cytokines and aberrant SRC tyrosine kinase activity, highlighting therapeutic potential in targeting this pathway to ameliorate conditions such as heart failure and PAH."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "1", "end_ref": "5"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": " \n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn the central nervous system and behavior, 5‑HT2B receptor function extends to modulating neural circuit maturation, neurotransmitter release, and behavioral outputs. Genetic studies have linked aberrant HTR2B function with impulsivity and psychiatric conditions, while preclinical models demonstrate that 5‑HT2B receptor activity is necessary for the full behavioral effects of psychostimulants such as MDMA. Moreover, the receptor contributes to the regulation of serotonin transporter post‑translational modifications and sustains the excitability of serotonergic neurons—processes critical for normal synaptic development and cognitive flexibility."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "6", "end_ref": "9"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": " \n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nBeyond cardiovascular and neural functions, the 5‑HT2B receptor is also instrumental in regulating tissue remodeling and regenerative processes. Its activation in noncardiac cells such as hepatic stellate cells triggers expression of transforming growth factor‑β1 and contributes to fibrogenesis during chronic liver injury, yet antagonism of 5‑HT2B can enhance hepatocyte proliferation and mitigate fibrosis. In bone, the receptor supports osteoblast recruitment, proliferation, and mineral deposition; in the gastrointestinal tract, modulation of 5‑HT2B receptor activity influences the contractility of interstitial cells of Cajal and slow wave propagation. Furthermore, in metabolic tissues including pancreatic islets, 5‑HT2B receptor signaling modulates beta‑cell proliferation and insulin secretion, emphasizing its diverse roles in peripheral tissue homeostasis."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_fs", "start_ref": "10", "end_ref": "17"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": " \n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nMechanistically, the receptor functions through diverse signaling cascades, including MAPK/ERK, PKC (notably PKCγ in certain cellular contexts), and the phospholipase A2/arachidonic acid pathways. Additional studies further illustrate that receptor heterodimerization with other 5‑HT2 family members can alter downstream signaling specificity, influencing cellular outcomes in brain and peripheral tissues.
