Functional studies using CRISPR-Cas9–mediated knockout in mice have revealed that loss of CABYR disrupts the organization of the fibrous sheath and the proper arrangement of the axonemal microtubule doublets, ultimately leading to impaired sperm motility and subfertility. During sperm capacitation, CABYR undergoes extensive phosphorylation on tyrosine as well as serine/threonine residues, suggesting that these post-translational modifications may be important for regulating its function during sperm maturation.
