| Name | septin 8 |
| Description | This gene is a member of the septin family of nucleotide binding proteins, originally described in yeast as cell division cycle regulatory proteins. Septins are highly conserved in yeast, Drosophila, and mouse, and appear to regulate cytoskeletal organization. Disruption of septin function disturbs cytokinesis and results in large multinucleate or polyploid cells. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2014] |

{"type": "root", "children": [{"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nSEPTIN8 is a member of the evolutionarily conserved septin family of cytosolic GTP‐binding proteins that assemble into higher order complexes. Initial studies demonstrated that SEPTIN8, like other septins, contains unique N- and C-terminal regions flanking a conserved central GTPase core, which governs both homotypic and heterotypic interactions with fellow septins. In human platelets and neurons, SEPTIN8 interacts directly with other septins such as SEPT5 and SEPT4, with proper subcellular localization to vesicle‐like structures dependent on the co‐expression of these partners. This assembly underlies its role in facilitating membrane remodeling events including exocytosis."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "1"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nIn neuronal cells, SEPTIN8 has emerged as a key regulator of protein trafficking that impacts neurodegenerative processes. A specific SEPTIN8 transcript variant modulates β‐amyloidogenic processing by influencing the intracellular sorting and stability of BACE1, the enzyme responsible for the cleavage of amyloid precursor protein (APP). This mechanism appears to affect soluble APPβ and Aβ levels, thereby linking SEPTIN8 to Alzheimer’s disease pathology."}, {"type": "fg", "children": [{"type": "fg_f", "ref": "3"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n"}]}, {"type": "t", "text": "\n\n"}, {"type": "p", "children": [{"type": "t", "text": "\nBeyond the nervous system, SEPTIN8 fulfills important roles in cellular stress responses.
